Become a Mentor

Do you enjoy the work you do?

What path did you take to discover your career?

Who inspired you to find a career you love?

Many at-risk youth aren’t aware of the many career opportunities available to them. The connection between what they learn sitting in a classroom and the real world seems non-existent.

You can bridge that gap.

Be a mentor and share one career possibility. Demonstrate how the math you learned has helped you in running your own business, or how speech class helped you to have needed communication skills. Engage your mentee in setting and reaching their goals. And most importantly, be a friend and role model that opens a world of opportunities here in Central Iowa.

Mentor Requirements

Volunteers must be 18 or older (and at least 5 years older than their mentee).

Individuals from both alternative and traditional careers and career paths are encouraged to volunteer.

All volunteers will be required to complete an application and background check, attend a three hour training, and are encouraged to attend at least one additional CYC training each year.

Volunteers are asked to make a time commitment of spending a minimum of 4 hours/month with their mentee for one year.  Approved mentors can request to be a face-to-face mentor (middle or high school) or an e-mentor (high school).
